Prerequisites: Trainee must have attended lectures S1 to S6. NB: It is also highly advisable that before starting the open water section of 'Elementary Diver', a medical examination by a suitably qualified GP is completed. Theory Lectures: · E1 - Physics and the Diver · E2 - The Principles of SCUBA · E3 - Open Water Diving · E4 - Buoyancy Jackets · E5 - Avoiding Decompression Illness Written Examination: The trainee must pass (=80% correct) a written exam based upon lectures S1-S6 and E1-E5. NB: Written examination should be completed to the satisfaction of the club D.O. before starting any open water diving. The written examination may be set by the club or obtained from the governing body (currently the SAA) head office. Pool Sessions (2): · Pool Session 1: 1) Assemble, test and fit SCUBA unit, complete 'Buddy Check' 2) Demonstrate safe entry into the water, safe method of decent, and (basic) control of buoyancy 3) Clear demand valve 3 times 4) Clear mask 3 times 5) Use Alternative Air Source (AAS) for ~50m both as donor and receiver in mid-water · Pool Session 2: 1) Mask removal clearing & refit 2) DV removal clearing & refit 3) Remove SCUBA unit and refit (under water) 4) Controlled Buoyant Lift 5) At surface, remove weight belt and then SCUBA unit and pass to assistant at poolside (entry to boat simulation) Open Water Assessment (1 dive): The trainee is to; · Carry out all pre-dive checks on their own equipment and also carry out a buddy check including agreeing on signals to be used. · Enter the water in a safe manner and demonstrate correct buoyancy (i.e. inflate jacket before entry and positive buoyancy on the surface) · Starting at the surface and following good diving practice commence dive, remain below surface for not less than 15 minutes, varying the dive depth between the surface and a maximum of 10 metres. · Demonstrate the ability to remove, refit and clear the demand valve a total of 3 times during the dive · Remove mask, refit and clear a total of 3 times during the dive · Demonstrate the correct signals to carry out any of the drills required. · Carry out the correct surfacing drill at the end of the dive (break surface with arm first, check buddy, signal 'ok' to the Dive Marshall or shore/boat cover). |
