Maldives was formed in 2001 by four SAA instructors who wanted to pass on their skills to others. From an initial email enquiry, twenty trainees attended the initial session. Over time, this reduced to sixteen keen dive trainees. Following the SAA guidelines for training, sessions were held every week, covering both theory in the classroom and practical skills in the pool. Eventually it was time for the Open Water dives to begin. It was also time to spend some money since, whilst the club had some equipment that could be used, it was somewhat limited. Fins, masks, dry suits were all purchased giving some serious discounts from the normal retail pricing. As time went by, the trainees completed their training to become Club Divers. Some went on through the Dive Leader, Dive Supervisor route and even on to becoming SAA Instructors themselves. Since these humble beginnings, some members have naturally shelved their diving in favour of other pursuits, some have continued diving, others have become professional instructors and in one case, even opened his own dive school in the area. The club has continued to evolve with new members joining. Maldives can now boast members affiliated to the SAA, BSAC and PADI with instructors in each of those disciplines.
